Merck
Merck & Co., a leading player in the global pharmaceutical industry, has achieved substantial revenue of approximately 60 billion USD. The company traces its origins back to 1668 when Jacob Friedrich Merck established a pharmacy store in Darmstadt, Germany. In 1891, a subsidiary known as Merck & Co. was established in the United States, and since 1917, it has operated as an independent American firm.
Merck & Co. offers a wide range of products, including vaccines, cancer treatments, and animal health solutions. Renowned for its extensive portfolio of approved pharmaceuticals, the company prioritizes research and development. Notably, it focuses on addressing diabetes, a prevalent chronic condition, with two significant medications. Januvia (sitagliptin) is a popular diabetes drug due to its weight-neutral effects and generated approximately 2.8 billion USD in sales in 2022. However, Merck's flagship product is the blockbuster cancer drug Keytruda.
Merck & Co. generates over half of its revenue outside the United States as a global corporation. With a workforce of over 69,000 employees in 2022, spread across 100 countries, it stands as one of the major pharmaceutical companies worldwide. Additionally, the company's total assets reached approximately 109 billion USD in the same year.
Merck is making a substantial investment of €250 million ($275.5 million) in a biotechnology development facility in Corsier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland. This facility will focus on developing biotech medications and clinical trial production, serving as a crucial link between research and manufacturing of newly discovered drugs. The groundbreaking ceremony for the biotech development center took place in January 2020, and the facility's structural work was completed with a topping-out ceremony in July 2021. The next phase involves interior design and equipment installation, with the center scheduled to open in 2023. The facility, situated near Merck's existing commercial biotech manufacturing facility in Corsier-sur-Vevey, spans approximately 15,700m2 and will be supported by around 250 personnel. This multidisciplinary team aims to expedite the availability of groundbreaking biotech treatments for clinical trials.
