Mouloud
The birth of the Prophet Mohammed is commemorated on this day. It occurs every year on the 12th day of the month of Rabi' al-awwal, which falls in the Georgian calendar's winter season.
A big street carnival, as well as a large street procession, takes place in cities and towns around the country. Food is handed to everyone, and houses and mosques are decorated. Children recite classic Arabic poetry and tell stories about Mohammed's life.
Mouloud, unlike other Yemeni festivities, is a national holiday, which means that all banks and businesses are closed.
