You will learn how to incorporate popular music into your teaching in the Music Education for Teachers specialty. You'll begin by studying with two highly qualified instructors: Krystal Banfield, Berklee's Vice President of Educational Outreach, and David Alexis, a Berklee Professor and long-time instructor for the Berklee City Music Program. They'll walk you through how they integrated popular music, improvisation, arrangement, and music technology into the classroom while still meeting common core learning requirements.
You'll continue with a more in-depth look at these areas to aid in the development of your popular music curriculum. You'll learn how to utilize improvisation as a language and for storytelling in Gary Burton's Jazz Improvisation class. You'll also learn how to employ chord scales, modes, and improv methods, among other things. Following that, you'll learn how to compose song arrangements in Bonnie Hayes and Sarah Brindell's Arranging for Songwriters class. Finally, in producer Stephen Webber's The Art of Music Production, you'll learn how to start recording music in a significant, yet easy way.
This specialty will provide you with the skills necessary to create engaging, effective, and relevant courses for your classroom, online learning area, or individual sessions.
