National Museum of Gitega
Burundi's national museum is the National Museum of Gitega. It was formed in 1955 under Belgian colonial control in Gitega. Although its collection is presented in a single room, it is the largest of Burundi's public museums. It had 20–50 visits per week on average in 2014.
The museum was founded in 1955 by the Belgian rulers of Burundi with the intention of preserving artifacts from Burundian traditional culture that were diminishing as a result of modernity and social change. It is also one of the most beautiful historical sites in Burundi. The collection of the museum comprises ethnographic and historical relics from the nation, as well as artifacts from the court of the Burundian monarchs. Due to a paucity of money, the museum has made few recent purchases.
With the assistance of the German Embassy in Burundi, a catalogue of the museum's collection titled Le Patrimoine Burundais: le Musée de Gitega was produced in 2015.
