Palácio dos Arcos
Itamaraty Palace, also known as Palácio dos Arcos, is a Brazilian building located in Brasília, the seat of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The palace was designed by Niemeyer in 1970. Currently, three buildings make up the headquarters of the Ministry: the Palace and Annexes I and II. At the front of the Palace, in front of the reflecting pool, is the sculpture Meteoro, designed by Bruno Giorgi. The Itamaraty Palace has the largest column-free hall in Latin America, with an area of 2,800 square meters. It is also considered the most artistically rich and best-preserved building on the Esplanade of the Ministries.
In Palácio dos Arcos, the lavishly decorated interior surrounds a semi-roofed courtyard with a garden. The building is open to the public, and a highlight of the interior is the spiralling freestanding staircase, which seems suspended in the air. The Itamaraty Palace was conceived as a building that would serve the purpose of presenting Brazil to foreign visitors and, therefore, its halls only house works by artists born or naturalized in Brazil – such as Athos Bulcão, Alfredo Volpi, Bruno Giorgi, Frans Krajcberg, Franz Weissmann, Maria Martins, Mary Vieira, Iberê Camargo, Ione Saldanha, Rubem Valentim.
