Playa Majagual and Mathilda
Playa Majagual is not too far away if you are looking for a little pristine, hidden, off-the-beaten-path bliss. Majagual is one of the best-kept secrets in the area, located only 18 minutes from San Juan del Sur. Majagual is a world-class beach with a 656-foot (200-meter) bay, beautiful quiet surf, and crystal-clear sand. On the beach, there are usually no more than 10 people at any given moment. It is a complete detachment from the outside world and total immersion in nature.
Mathilda is a combined package with Majagual, with only one small ranchito to eat at that serves basic yet adequate meals. The two beaches are separated by a rock formation, and the entrances to both sites are only a block apart. Mathilda has clear sand as well, but it is noted for its fierce surf, unlike Majagual. Right in front of Mathilda sits Matilda, a low-key hostel. At night, expect to be swarmed by crabs, and if you're lucky, a turtle may appear. Balcones de Majagual is a more upscale hotel that is near both beaches. When visiting these beaches, make sure to bring enough supplies because there is not a convenience store nearby.
