It is one of a rash of brand-new luxury hotels that have popped up in a neighborhood that was once known for its tenement slums in the center of the trendy, slightly hectic Lower East Side. Countless well-known bars and eateries are just a short stroll away, including Rebelle, Dirty French, and Freemans. Balthazar and The Dutch are located in SoHo just five blocks away. Chinatown and Greenwich Village, as well as much of downtown Manhattan, are close by, and Williamsburg, Brooklyn's most exciting and fashionable neighborhood, is just across the East River.
The multiple communal spaces in Public, each of which is intended to promote interaction, are the source of the company's motto, "Populist not elitist." There is a surprisingly calm front garden, a sizable flower-filled terrace at the back, and three bars that are all open to the public round-the-clock and have large sharing tables, sofas, and even bleacher seating. The modern aesthetic was created by Swiss architects Herzog & De Meuron and features polished concrete, bamboo, and bleached wood. However, as one might anticipate from the creator of Studio 54, there are also a lot of mirrors, smoked glass, and neon flashes; even the escalators that take visitors from the ground floor to the lobby are entirely disco.
The unnecessary components of the conventional hotel experience have been removed by Public. There is no reception, so visitors check in on their phones or one of a bank of iPads when they arrive, much like they would on an airline. Instead of bellboys, there is a group of energetic, multi-tasking "Public Advisors" dressed in t-shirts and high-tops. There is also no formal turndown service. There is a cutting-edge gym in the basement, but given the property's party atmosphere, the likelihood of it ever being busy is somewhat remote. The rooftop bar, which offers outdoor beds and 360-degree views of the city, and Public Arts, a large basement space that hosts screenings, club nights, and performances, are more well-liked.
