Reverse Dictionary
The way Reverse Dictionary works is quite simple. It simply goes through lots of dictionary definitions and gets the ones that best match your search query. For example, if you type something like "desire to create what used to be", the engine will return a "reproducible" result. It starts to give consistently good results (although it can sometimes return unsatisfactory results). If you have ever been in a situation where you know a concept but don't know how to use the right words to convey an idea, then this app is for you. You write a concept or sentence into the app and it gets the best words to describe that idea. It also gets the definition of the words it finds.
It works a lot like a thesaurus except that it allows you to search by a definition, rather than a single word. So, in a sense, this tool is a "word search engine" or a sentence-to-word converter. Reverse Dictionary uses a variety of algorithms and multiple databases to find similar words for a search query. The definitions are taken from the well-known and open source WordNet database, so many thanks to the many contributors for creating such a great free resource. Although the dictionary is suitable for the reader's need to find the meaning of words, it does not meet the needs of the language producer (writer/speaker) to obtain a suitable word with a concept in mind. It takes the user's description (in natural language) of the concept as input and provides a set of words that respond to that description as output.
