While documented historical records only date back to the late 15th-century advent of European immigrants. More than 600 recognized bands of First Nations people make up the largest group of indigenous people in Canada.

The Métis are a unique group that emerged from the multicultural contacts of the Europeans and the First Nations people. The Inuit are also from Canada and primarily inhabit the Arctic regions. Approximately 30% of today's Aboriginal population is made up of the Métis people, who are spread out over the nation. Today, Canada is the most multicultural nation in the world, a distinction it takes great pride in and which is primarily attributable to the nation's relationship with the Aboriginal people.
