Rio Tinto Aluminum Manufacturing Company is a subsidiary of the metal mining group (Rio Tinto Group) the world's second-largest after BHP. Rio Tinto consolidated its aluminum-related businesses into an aluminum products group (originally named Rio Tinto Alcan), which was formed in late 2007 when Rio Tinto acquired the Canadian company Alcan.
Aluminum production is divided into three main areas by Rio Tinto: bauxite, alumina, and primary metals. Aluminum and bauxite are mined raw by Rio Tinto from sites in Australia, Brazil, and Africa. Currently, Rio Tinto has 6 aluminum refineries, 6 special aluminum production plants, and 26 aluminum smelters.
