Ruth Fertel, the company's founder, risked everything and mortgaged her home to buy a modest steakhouse in New Orleans in 1965, at a time when most women couldn't even apply for a bank card without their husband's signature. Ruth learned the restaurant business as a single mother with two sons, overcame numerous obstacles, and revolutionized hospitality in the process. Ruth was forced to relocate her business when a kitchen fire damaged Chris Steak House in 1976, but the Chris Steak House name was not allowed to follow her. Ruth improvised due to a lack of time and added her own name to the sign. As a result, the restaurant became known as "Ruth's Chris Steak House," and their renowned name was established.

Ruth Fertel, dubbed the "First Lady of Steak," was a unique individual. She grew a global business from a 60-seat steakhouse, never losing sight of her original recipe for success: excellent steak, warm hospitality, and never-ending good times.
