This resort is located in Middleburg, Virginia, about 46 miles west of Washington, D.C., but with its acres of rolling fields and relaxed atmosphere, it feels worlds away from the hectic capital. The colonial decor, complete with hardwood floors, plantation-style architecture, and traditional design accents, is popular with visitors. The guest rooms are spacious and feature flat-panel TVs, minibars, and beautiful views. Salamander Resort & Spa also has a large equestrian facility where guests can put their horseback riding skills to the test (for an additional fee).

Make an appointment at the Salamander Spa, which also has an infinity pool and a fitness center, for something more relaxing. Finally, end your day at Harrimans, which is well-known for its locally sourced cuisine. Some warn, however, that the service provided throughout the property is unsatisfactory.
