The company was founded in 1991 and quickly rose since then due to its close connections to the Russian government. In 2014, it was the largest bank in Russia and Eastern Europe, as well as the third largest in Europe, ranking 60th in the world and first in Central and Eastern Europe in The Banker's Top 1000 World Banks.
