Shanghai's population of 27.06 million makes it the top most populous city, not only in Asia but also in the world. Shanghai is strategically located in the Yangtze River Delta and the city's port ranks as the busiest in the world. The town of Qinglong, was founded in 746, before Shanghai and it developed as a trading port during the Chinese dynasties. Shanghai's economic potential made it a center of conflict in the 19th century as the British and French fought for control of the city. The Japanese also invaded Shanghai during World War II. Shanghai is an economic and commercial center in China today, and it has enjoyed double-digit growth since 1992, excluding the global recession of 2008 and 2009. Shanghai's top services are real estate, financial services and retail while manufacturing accounts for about 40% of total output. Shanghai has many industrial zones such as the Shanghai Hongqiao Economic and Technological Development Zone. Shanghai attracts local immigrants as well as foreign settlers from Japan, the US and South Korea.
