Shein, originally founded by Nanjing entrepreneur Chris Xu in October 2008 under the name ZZKKO, is projected to become the largest fashion store in the world by 2022. With a valuation of $100 billion following a funding round in April 2022, Shein is able to ship to more than 150 nations.

Shein's success has been linked to the fact that it caters to the budget-conscious tastes of the millennial generation.At first, the company was thought to be similar to a drop-shipping service because it did not engage in product development or production but rather purchased goods in bulk from the wholesale clothes market in Guangzhou.In 2012, Shein started building its own supply chain system, taking the first steps toward becoming a vertically integrated store.As of 2022, the firm will have created a network of more than 3,000 suppliers in Guangzhou, the epicenter of its supply chain.

Shein's $24 billion in sales in 2022 were nearly as great as those of long-standing shops Zara and H&M.[1] Shein has been embroiled in a number of scandals in recent years, including copyright disputes, tax evasion, abuses of human rights, and health and safety worries. Bloomberg Businessweek and other outlets report that Shein's business strategy has benefited from the trade war between China and the United States.
