Solar Energy Basics by The State University of New York
This course covers the foundations of solar power and how they apply to solar panel system installations. You'll learn how to compare solar energy to other energy sources and how photovoltaics, or solar panels, turn sunlight into electricity. You'll be able to identify the major components of a basic photovoltaic (solar panel) system, such as one that's found on a house or building, and describe what each one does. You'll also learn how to determine a building's electrical consumption, minimize the overall demand, and construct a solar panel system to satisfy that annual need at a specific site.
You'll also evaluate the various pricing schemes in use and significant regulatory considerations for grid-connected systems (where a house or building is connected to the electrical grid and also generates electricity from solar panels). A capstone design project that includes a simple audit of a building to assess demand, as well as a component selection to construct a solar panel system to match that demand.
