Sony
Sony Mobile Communications Inc. was a worldwide telecommunications firm established on October 1, 2001, as a joint venture between Sony Group Corporation and Ericsson. It was founded as Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications and was based in London, England, until Sony bought out Ericsson's stake in the business on February 16, 2012. On April 1, 2021, Sony merged its electronics companies, including Sony Mobile, under a single entity known as Sony Corporation.
Prior to April 1, 2021, Sony Mobile exclusively produced Android-powered smartphones under the Xperia sub-brand; it also provided tablet computers (Sony Tablet), smartwatches (Sony SmartWatch), and fitness trackers (Sony SmartBand), as well as accessories and software for the devices.
Sony Mobile has R&D centers in Lund, Sweden, Beijing, China, Tokyo, Japan, and San Francisco, California. Sony Ericsson, Sony Mobile's predecessor, owned a 9% worldwide mobile phone market share in 2007, making it the fourth-largest vendor at the time.
