Sunnybrook School
Sunnybrook School is a school located in North Toronto. It was founded in 1952 by Mrs. Irmingard Hoff and was one of the first preschools in the area. The school used to be in Leaside but moved to its current location on Merton Street in 1960.
Sunnybrook School is proud to be the first authorized school in Ontario to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program at the Primary Years Program (PYP) level. They have been teaching the IB curriculum since 1997 and have four staff members who are workshop leaders for the IB program.
In 2022, the school integrated the IB PYP enhancements into their program, focusing on student agency and assessing the learning process. Student agency refers to students having a voice in their learning, taking ownership of it, and being able to act based on what they learn.
Their goal is to create opportunities for students to actively participate in their learning. Assessment in the PYP ensures that different learning styles are recognized and rewarded. It provides valuable information for teachers to understand each student individually and personalize their teaching to meet each student's needs.
At Sunnybrook School, students are taught to be outstanding members of the school community in various ways. The IB Learner Profile gives them a common language for teaching values and behaviors that contribute to a strong community, where everyone takes responsibility and feels valued.
