Sweet treats and coffee
Did you know that Austria has at least one bakery on every street? You should be mindful if you are an Austrian visitor with a sweet craving. The self-described capital of cake is Austria. Austrians are so protective of their sweets that legal disputes have broken out over who has the right to call themselves "The Original Sacher Torte." Café Demel and Hotel Sacher got into a spat over the chocolate sponge from 1954 and 1963. Both of them sought to claim that their rendition was "the original." They ultimately reached a settlement outside of court, with Sacher winning. Don't forget to try a slice in one of Vienna's coffee shops while you are here. The air will be filled with the aroma of melting chocolate and various types of cream, creating a distinctive ambience.
You might be served a delicious piece of cake and a mediocre cup of coffee if you do have the time to visit an old-school cafe, which you should definitely do since it's worth the wait. In these retro cafes, the worse the coffee, the better the cake. You can still get fantastic cake and coffee at a new third wave type café, but it won't have the same old-fashioned charm that makes Austrian cafes so much fun.
