The Broken Earth Series – N.K Jemisin

Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy set a number of firsts. She was not only the first black author to win the Hugo for Best Novel, but she was also the first person to win it three years in a row - for each book in the Broken Earth trilogy. In doing so, she became the first person to win the prize for each book in a trilogy. When it comes to Jemisin and her trilogy, there are no modest accomplishments.

In a distant, post-apocalyptic future, the earth is plagued by periodic disasters that constantly shatter and reshape not just the world, but the people who must survive in it. The world-building of the Broken Earth trilogy, as well as the range of the cast of characters, is what makes it truly stand out.
