The Lost Daughter had its global premiere on September 3, 2021, at the 78th Venice International Film Festival, where Gyllenhaal received the Golden Osella Award for Best Screenplay. It will have a limited theatrical release in the United States on December 17, 2021, before streaming on Netflix on December 31.
'The Lost Daughter,' based on Elena Ferrante's novel of the same name, is a psychological drama film starring Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Jessie Buckley, and Paul Mescal. Leda, an English teacher, decides to take some time off and go on vacation while her daughters are with their father in Canada. While everything appears to be going as planned, things take a turn for the worst when Leda encounters a family whose mere presence unsettles her for some reason. One thing leads to another, and the middle-aged instructor suddenly realizes the mistakes she made as a mother over the years, as well as the ramifications of those faults.
