The New National Gallery

The New National Gallery (Neue Nationalgalerie) is housed in a two-part steel and glass structure, which consists of a square hall and a pleasant terrace with sculptures by Alexander Calder and Henry Moore. It was erected in 1968 (and entirely refurbished in 2018). The collection includes works by the Realists, the German school in Rome, the French and German Impressionists, the Expressionists, the Bauhaus movement, and the Surrealists, as well as a good variety of American paintings from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Adolph von Menzel, Edouard Manet, Auguste Renoir, Edvard Munch, and Max Ernst are among its most important artists.

The gallery also presents special exhibitions on a regular basis and is well-known for its workshops, which include programs focusing on the restoration of paintings and drawings. There are English language tours offered, as well as a café and bookshop on-site.
