The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)

The Pursuit of Happiness is a 2006 American biographical drama film directed by Gabriele Muccino and starring Will Smith as homeless salesman Chris Gardner. Smith's son Jaden Smith co-stars as Gardner's son, Christopher Jr., in his feature film debut. Steven Conrad's screenplay is based on Gardner's best-selling memoir of the same name, which she co-wrote with Quincy Troupe in 2006. It is based on Gardner's nearly year-long struggle with homelessness. Gardner notices a mural on the wall outside the daycare facility where his son attends, which inspired the unusual spelling of the film's title.

For once, Smith stars in a heartwarming film that isn't completely sickening, making this unfashionable film genre appear to be quite good. This is the true story of American businessman Chris Gardner, who faced adversity and homelessness on his way to the top, a la Horatio Alger. Smith portrays him as a regular guy with ideals and high standards, a single father who falls into poverty and fights his way out.

The film was released on December 15, 2006, by Columbia Pictures, and received moderately positive reviews, with Smith’s performance and emotional weight of the story garnering universal acclaim. Smith was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Actor.
