The symbol of America - Mount Rushmore
Situated in Keystone, South Dakota's Black Hills. It has taken decades to carve the famous sculpture into the granite face, which depicts George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The decision to carve the faces of the three presidents was not without controversy, but there has been significant discussion regarding who the fourth face should honor. Teddy Roosevelt, according to some, should be picked because of his work to protect and construct the Panama Canal, while Woodrow Wilson is preferred because of his leadership of the United States during World War I.
In the end, Roosevelt was selected. A grassroots initiative to add women's rights advocate Susan B. Anthony to Mount Rushmore first appeared in 1937. Even a bill requesting Anthony was forwarded to Congress. However, Congress decided that only the top four would remain because of the threat of money shortages during the Great Depression and World War II. This structure is well-known throughout the entire world and has become one of the seven symbols of the United States. People who have made significant contributions to the creation, preservation, and development of the land country have been acknowledged.
