Trinity Medical Sciences University
Trinity Medical Sciences University (TMSU) is an offshore private medical school with its Basic Science MD program, Pre-medical program, and Masters program in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Caribbean, and Clinical Science MD program in Baltimore, United States. It opened in 2008 as a fully accredited medical facility to address a physician shortage in the United States and Canada. It is headquartered in Roswell, Georgia, and it collaborates with Milton Cato Memorial Hospital in Kingstown and Northwest Hospital in Baltimore.
Undergraduate programs are available for students who have not completed the four-semester prerequisite courses for admission to medical school. For students who do not have applicable credits from foreign universities, the Pre-Medical program offers 90 credit hours of a basic medical curriculum. Because criteria differ from country to country, students who have previously earned college-level credits are encouraged to submit those credits for review in order to confirm their applicability to Trinity's academic requirements.
The medical school curriculum is based on the four-year model used in the United States, with 130 weeks of study required. The Trinity program is divided into five terms of basic science study, followed by five terms of clinical core and elective clerkships. Students who successfully complete the ten terms, including various NBME subject exams, and pass the USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3 are awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree. Students can begin participating in inpatient care in the first semester of medical school due to Trinity's unique relationship with Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, for which Trinity pays an annual fee for the right to collaborate and co-fund a pediatric surgeon for public-sector practice. In addition to providing care at Milton Cato Hospital, students assist health officers at Calliaqua district clinics, the Stubbs Polyclinic in Kingstown, and various health fairs throughout the island.
Trinity's master of health sciences degree program is designed for students who want to work in medical fields as well as hospital and business administration. As the increasing complexity of healthcare necessitates an advanced understanding of medicine and healthcare, even in its allied professions, Trinity is adapting to train professionals interested in those areas to provide a similar level of quality care through their own specialized roles that its physician graduates provide.
Trinity Medical Sciences University is actively involved in local community service, ranging from healthcare outreach under the school's umbrella to student activities groups (such as Trinity's AMSA and CaMSA chapters) reaching out to local children's homes or charity groups on their own accord. A long-standing relationship with the World Pediatric Project allows high-performing 5th term students to assist visiting physicians in the field, increasing their exposure to complex medical cases and allowing them to network with prominent North American physicians.
