Tupungato
Tupungato is a gigantic Andean lava dome that dates back to Pleistocene periods and is one of the tallest mountains in the Americas. It is located on the border of the Chilean Metropolitan Region (near a major international highway about 80 kilometers (50 miles) east of Santiago) and the Argentine province of Mendoza (about 100 kilometers (62 miles) south of Aconcagua, the highest peak in both the Southern and Western hemispheres).
The active Tupungatito volcano (roughly, small Tupungato), which last erupted in 1987, is located immediately to its southwest.The volcano is called after the Tupungato Department, which is a prominent wine-producing region in Argentina's Mendoza province. According to recent Chilean mapping, it stands at a height of 6635 meters.
