Chile's geography is defined by a number of mountainous regions included within mountain ranges. The Andean range is the country's most prominent range. ... read more...

  1. The highest point in the country is Ojos Del Salado. The stratovolcano, which is located on the border between Argentina and Chile at an elevation of 22,608 feet, was first climbed in 1937. Despite evidence of activity such as fumaroles and lava flows, the volcano has not erupted in over 1,300 years. Because of its proximity to the Atacama Desert, the mountain is mostly dry.

The mountain is unusually dry due to its location near South America's Arid Diagonal, which prevents the production of glaciers. Despite the arid climate, a permanent crater lake of 100 meters (330 feet) in diameter exists within the summit crater and east of the main peak at an elevation of 6,480 meters (21,260 feet)-6,500 meters (21,300 feet). This is the world's highest lake of any sort. The mountain lacks flora due to its high altitude and arid climate.

Ojos Del Salado summit is mostly covered in snow throughout the winter, and on the eastern side lies a crater lake with a height of 20965 feet. A large number of hikers and climbers visit the peak.

    • Nevado Tres Cruces is a volcanic massif in the Andes Mountains on Argentina's border with Chile. It has three main summits: Tres Cruces Sur at 6,748 meters (22,139 feet) and Tres Cruces Centro at 6,629 meters (21,749 feet), as well as Tres Cruces Norte at 6,206 meters (22,206 feet) (20,361 ft). The Andes' Tres Cruces Sur is the sixth highest peak.

      Nevado Tres Cruces
has a long history of activity, with at least 1.5 million years of eruptions. The complex is surrounded by lava domes and has several craters on its tops. The main volcano is rhyodacitic in nature and has erupted twice in the last 1.5 million years, the first 1.5 million years ago and the second 67,000 years ago. The most recent eruption was 28,000 years ago, but the volcano is a contributing source for a Holocene eruption and could erupt again in the future.

    • Llullaillaco is a dormant stratovolcano on the Argentina-Chile border (Salta Province) (Antofagasta Region). It is located in the Puna de Atacama, an area of high volcanic peaks on a high plateau near the Atacama Desert, one of the world's driest regions. After Ojos del Salado, it is the world's second highest active volcano.

Dacitic lava flows formed Llullaillaco in two periods during the Pleistocene-Holocene period. About 1.5 million years ago, the oldest rocks were formed. The volcano's southeastern slope fell about 150,000 years ago, causing a debris avalanche that extended as far as 25 kilometers (16 miles) from the peak. The summit region's youngest dated rocks were erupted 5,600 250 years ago, however there are accounts of activity dating back to the 19th century.

The first recorded climb of the mountain occurred in 1950, but indications of previous climbs and a number of archeological sites have been discovered on the peak and at its base; Llullaillaco is the world's highest archeological site. The Youngsters of Llullaillaco, or mummified bones of three children, were discovered at its top in 1999. It's assumed that they were human sacrifices. Mice have been seen on the summit area, which is the highest finding of mammal on the planet.

Tres Cruces Central has a long history of activity, with at least 1.5 million years of eruptions. The complex is surrounded by lava domes and has several craters on its tops. The main volcano is rhyodacitic in nature and has erupted twice in the last 1.5 million years, the first 1.5 million years ago and the second 67,000 years ago.

    • Incahuasi is a volcanic peak in South America's Andes. It is located on the boundary of Argentina's Catamarca Province and Chile's Atacama Region. The peak of Incahuasi is 6,621 meters (21,722 feet) above sea level.

A 3.5-kilometer-wide (2.2-mile) caldera and two stratovolcanoes make up the volcano. Four pyroclastic cones located 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) to the northeast have created 10 square kilometers of basalt-andesite lava flows (4 sq mi).

Incahuasi is near Paso San Francisco, on the border between Argentina and Chile. The border is crossed by a major road.

    • Tupungato is a gigantic Andean lava dome that dates back to Pleistocene periods and is one of the tallest mountains in the Americas. It is located on the border of the Chilean Metropolitan Region (near a major international highway about 80 kilometers (50 miles) east of Santiago) and the Argentine province of Mendoza (about 100 kilometers (62 miles) south of Aconcagua, the highest peak in both the Southern and Western hemispheres).

The active Tupungatito volcano (roughly, small Tupungato), which last erupted in 1987, is located immediately to its southwest. The volcano is called after the Tupungato Department, which is a prominent wine-producing region in Argentina's Mendoza province. According to recent Chilean mapping, it stands at a height of 6635 meters.

    • Cerro el Muerto (also referred to as "The Dead One") is a range or area on Argentina's border with Chile. Its height is 6,510 meters (21,358 ft). It's in the Puna de Atacama, in the Atacama Region of Copiapó Province. It barely receives a few climbing attempts per year, the majority of which are from Chile.

Muerto is roughly 6510 meters above sea level, according to the elevation supplied by the available Digital elevation models, SRTM (6490m), ASTER (6488m), SRTM filled with ASTER (6490m), TanDEM-X (6533m), and a handheld GPS survey by Maximo Kausch on 12/2010 (6519 meters).

The closest significant col is 4414 meters in height. As a result, it has a prominence of 2096 meters. Based on the Dominance method, Muerto is listed as a range or area with a dominance of 32.2 percent. Its parent peak is Ojos del Salado, with an 8-kilometer topographic isolation. Suzanne Imber discovered this information while conducting study in 2014.
