It was directed by Domee Shi in her feature directorial debut, written by Shi and Julia Cho, and produced by Lindsey Collins. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 94% of 267 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 8/10. The website's consensus reads, "Heartwarming, humorous, beautifully animated, and culturally expansive, Turning Red extends Pixar's long list of family-friendly triumphs".

Pixar’s newest release is going straight to Disney+ on March 11! It is definitely Turning Red. Mei Lee is a confident, dorky 13-year-old who is continually torn between being a good, dutiful daughter and a chaotic teenager. Going through puberty, she’s constantly bombarded by changes in her interests, relationships, body, and feelings. But she’s also got another concerning issue. Whenever she gets too excited about something, she poofs into a giant red panda with absolutely no control.
