Understanding by Design

Another book on the list of the best books on test preparation is Understanding by Design. What is the difference between comprehending and knowing? What do we want students to know and be able to accomplish? What kind of enduring knowledge is it worthwhile to comprehend? How will we determine if pupils genuinely comprehend and can apply what they've learned? How can we structure our courses and units so that "understanding" and "uncovering" take precedence over "coverage"? Understanding by Design delves into these issues and offers suggestions for the teacher-designer. The book begins by delving into the concept of backward design as a complement to coverage and activity-based designs. Although it is counter-intuitive, this strategy improves the attention and coherence of education.

The six "facets" of understanding are proposed by authors Wiggins and McTighe as a multidimensional approach. The components work together with backward design to create a powerful, practical framework for curriculum, assessment, and instruction. Beyond its theories, Understanding by Design includes design tools such as criteria for selecting "big ideas" worthy of deep understanding, strategies for framing units of study around essential questions, a continuum of assessment methods for determining the degree to which students understand, and the WHERE framework, which promotes student engagement and "rethinking." The book ends with a unit design template and criteria to help with local quality control. Knowledge by Design will assist educators in developing a better understanding of comprehension so that the curriculum and assessments they create are focused on improving their students' understanding.

Some reviews about this book: “McTighe and Williams successfully expound on a subject often mired in a philosophical debate: how to assess understanding and evaluate true learning. It is an outstanding framework for developing curriculum intent on extending beyond traditional methods of teaching and preaching to students.”
