Universities of Burundi
Burundi's Institution of Burundi is a public university in Bujumbura. It was founded in 1964 and now has over 13,000 students enrolled in eight colleges and five institutes. Three campuses are located in Bujumbura, with a fourth in Gitega. Burundi's only publicly sponsored university, it was given its current name in 1977.
Pierre Nkurunziza, the President of Burundi from 2005 until 2020, is an alumnus. He studied physical education and eventually worked at the university as an assistant instructor before being forced to flee in 1995 as a Hutu. Before the events of 1995, his successor, Évariste Ndayishimiye, studied law at the university but did not complete his studies.
The Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA), the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), and the Conseil Africain et Malagache pour l'Education Supérieure (CAMES) are all connected with UB (CAMES).
