Established in 1876, this age-old Chinese Buddhist temple has witnessed the transformation of Kuta from a sleepy village to a vibrant surf paradise. Yet, it remains a steadfast sanctuary of peace and quietness.
The temple's intricate, far Eastern-style architecture and vivid murals contrast the surrounding modern landscape. Entering the temple's courtyard, you will be immediately enveloped by a calming sense of serenity - a welcome respite from the hectic traffic scenes outside. The constant wafts of incense smoke from the altars further enhance the spiritual atmosphere, creating a lovely ambiance suitable for a quiet time of contemplation and reflection.
Vihara Dharmayana Kuta's main structure, the Baktisala, is a majestic sight featuring large round lanterns hanging from the rims of its roof and supported by giant red pillars adorned with menacing mythical dragon figures. Nearby, the smaller Dharmasala serves as a space for family prayers. At the same time, the unique place of worship under the banyan tree, dedicated to the '4-Faced Buddha,' offers a tranquil setting for devotees to seek solace and guidance.
You are welcome to explore the temple grounds, provided that you respect local customs and dress modestly, avoiding shorts and singlets. Flash photography is prohibited in the praying rooms, and picture-taking of certain relics is forbidden. A friendly senior temple keeper is usually present near the outside altar, ready to provide insights into the temple's history and significance.
