Viljandi Folk Music Festival
This most famous festival in Estonia takes place every year on the final weekend in July when the normally tranquil city of Viljandi is radically changed as the little city center is suddenly swamped with people. This is the most powerful manifestation of a specific mindset from the early 1990s. This frame of thought places a premium on tradition, legacy, and local identity, and strives to adapt spiritual ideals collected through hundreds of thousands of years to modern lives - all in the name of keeping traditions alive and strengthening our national identities.
Viljandi Folk Music Festival is an Estonian music event centered on European folk music. The festival's most appealing feature is its welcoming environment. Every year, around 25,000 people attend the performances, but many more simply come to enjoy the festivities. As a result, it has grown into Estonia's largest yearly music festival, as well as one of the major folk music festivals in the Baltic and Nordic nations.
