Vrije University was founded in 1880 and has consistently been ranked as one of the best universities in the Netherlands. VU is one of Amsterdam's large, publicly funded research universities. This university is a 'Free' institution. This refers to the university's independence from both the state and the Dutch Reformed Church, which gave rise to its name.
