Waldorf Astoria New York

The original Waldorf Astoria began as two hotels on Fifth Avenue built by feuding relatives in 1893. The lobby is vast, chandeliered, and opulent in the art deco style-everything a famous hotel should be. The Waldorf is now getting a thorough reconstruction and restoration due to its grand age, but it is so infamous in New York's history that we couldn't leave it off the list. Since FDR, every President has slept in one of the 26 Presidential Suites.

This upscale art deco hotel is a 2-minute walk from the 51 St. subway station and a 10-minute walk from the Museum of Modern Art. The luxurious rooms and suites provide flat-screen TVs in addition to iPod docks, minibars, designer amenities, and paid Wi-Fi. Upgraded suites come with wet bars and incorporate separate living areas. A lounge with free breakfast is accessible from opulent penthouse suites. There is a classy bar and steakhouse, a fine-dining restaurant with a pianist, and a classic cocktail lounge. A spa, a fitness facility open around the clock, a gift store, a business center, and a meeting room are additional features.
