Wat Arun: A Heaven-Like Peaceful Place
The most beautiful temple in the city, Wat Arun, commonly known as the "Temple of the Dawn," is even more spectacular at sunset. This temple, which is located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, is a treasure that is well worth visiting because of its architecture and setting. The temple, whose name is taken from the Hindu god Aruna, is revered by the locals and is regarded as one of the top family-friendly destinations in Bangkok.
Wat Arun, which dates back to the time of the historic battles between the former Siam and Burma, is somewhat of a triumphal complex. Ayutthaya was left to ruins and ashes after it was conquered by the Burmese, but General Taksin and the survivors pledged to march "until the sun rose again" and to erect a temple here. That temple was called Wat Arun, or the Temple of the Dawn. The new monarch later constructed a royal residence and a personal chapel there. Just before dusk, if you ascend to the top of the prang, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the sun setting over the Chao Praya River.
