Wat Pho: The Famous Temple Of The Reclining Buddha
Located immediately south of the Grand Palace precinct, Wat Pho makes an excellent addition to your palace tour, provided your feet are up for more walking. The temple is the oldest in Bangkok and was constructed by King Rama I. It has a long history of being revered as a destination of healing and was formerly renowned for both its pharmacy and for being Thailand's first "university" - both of which were founded by King Rama III. The traditional medical school on the campus offers Thai and foot massages, but the costs are considerably higher than those at massage parlors in other parts of the city.
Currently, Wat Pho is primarily renowned for the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, which houses a 45-meter-long and 15-meter-tall figure of the Buddha that can only be admired in segments. The soles of the feet, inlaid with a myriad of precious stones, are particularly beautiful. Moreover, keep an eye out for long earlobes that signify noble birth and hands that are shaped like lotus buds to represent purity and beauty.
