Wengen is a lovely car-free community in one of the most magnificently gorgeous locations of the Swiss Alps; its local ski area, linked with Grindelwald, provides a fair variety of terrain best suited to intermediates and has the awe-inspiring North Face of the Eiger as a background. Wengen, Switzerland's lovely hamlet, is set on a large natural balcony overlooking the Lauterbrunnen Valley in the midst of the stunning Jungfrau area, in the morning shadow of three of the most unique and famous Alps peaks: the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau.
Although it boasts a perfectly fine nursery slope in the middle of its nearly traffic-free center and has long drawn British visitors, Snow does not suggest this attractive resort for families. What distinguishes it is that it is one of the few ski resorts that is also fantastic for non-skiers, making it an excellent choice for a 'generations' family vacation. The environment is spectacular, and it's simple for skiers and non-skiers to gather for lunch. There are great hikes, and you can try ice skating, tobogganing, and curling. The cog railway from Lauterbrunnen provides access, and everyone will enjoy the train excursion up to the peak of the Jungfrau.
The Wengernalp railway, which also offers uplift to the top slopes of Wengen's local Kleine Scheidegg-Mannlichen ski resort, adds to the village's magnificent environment. This railway is also an important link in Wengen's history as one of the world's first ski resorts: it was pioneering British ski enthusiasts who persuaded the railway company to keep running the line during the winter months, to provide uplift to the snow-covered mountain slopes above the village so that they could then ski downhill for fun; prior to that, recreational skiing and ski racing had consisted of Nordic-style activities in which participants The most of the skiing is on the slopes above Grindelwald, but you can also go to equally scenic Mürren. It's bound to be expensive because it's Switzerland, but all-inclusive vacations help.
