Worden Pond
Worden Pond is situated in South Kingstown, Washington County, Rhode Island. It is the largest natural freshwater lake in the state of Rhode Island and the second-largest freshwater lake in the state after Scituate Reservoir.
When King Philip's War broke out in June 1675, Roger Williams asked Richard Smith's Castle to host a meeting between the Narragansett tribal leaders and the Massachusetts government. The Narragansetts decided to meet at Worden Pond with Queen Quaiapen, Ninigret, Quinnapin, and Quaunochu in order to assuage Queen Quaiapen's concerns. They also pledged to deliver Philip to the English if he sought safety with the Narragansetts. Worden Pond was close to the fort in the Great Swamp.
Aside from swimming, Worden Pond is a great area to windsurf, sail, kayak, and canoe. The Great Swamp Wildlife Management Area, which offers fantastic hiking, wildlife viewing, and cycling, is located near the northern end of the lake.
