Animated TV shows are generally thought of as being for kids or teens. But animated TV has taken off for a whole new market—adults. Today’s animated TV shows ... read more...

  1. Andrew Goldberg, Nick Kroll, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett's Big Mouth, set in a Westchester middle school, masterfully nails the uncomfortable shift from child to adolescent that we've all worked so hard to forget. With the aid of their "hormone monsters," a group of pre-teens handles puberty, their burgeoning sexualities, relationships, and all that fun adolescent stuff in the program. Every teenage illness has a fantasy representation, whether it's the Shame Wizard or the Depression Kitty, and these mythical figures are entwined with the youngsters' suburban reality.

Big Mouth is the right mix of honest, relatable, and entertaining, and the fact that it's animated lets they forget they're growing up all over again. Despite the fact that the primary protagonists are 12-13 years old, the program is clearly aimed at an adult audience, with plenty of sex jokes and graphic visuals. Big Mouth is the program for you if you want to remember and wish you had a hormone monster to blame your adolescent issues on, or if you just want a good chuckle.

  2. The title character, BoJack Horseman, is an anthropomorphic horse with a famous history. He encounters a variety of different disturbing personalities while figuring out how to deal with his waning celebrity (anthropomorphic animals and humans alike). BoJack is best described as a self-hater with sardonic humor and self-destructive conduct, as well as being depressed and addicted.

Raphael Bob-program Waksberg's is a great illustration of how animation can help people cope with depression and other difficult themes. It's easier to deal with your own existential issues when they're processed via visuals of a world that doesn't seem like ours. The space created by the difference between the two realities makes self-reflection more tolerable. The show's tragic nature doesn't drag us down as a live-action drama might; BoJack's non-human shape separates him from reality enough for "BoJack Horseman" to be a fun and binge-worthy watch.

  3. If Abbi Jacobson's voice and Matt Groening's animation drew you in, be aware that "Disenchantment" is nothing like "Broad City" or "The Simpsons." And that's just OK! The tale follows Princess Bean and her two friends, an elf and a demon, as they traverse the medieval fantasy kingdom of Dreamland.

Disenchantment, which is full of filthy comedy and mystical creatures, deals with extremely realistic real-life concerns like loyalty, societal expectations, and gender stereotypes. This is an excellent program to watch in a week or two because it's easy to follow and has a retro animation style and attractive landscape.

  4. After being condemned to solitary confinement onboard a tiny spaceship as punishment for impersonating a member of the elite Infinity Guard, Gary Space (Olan Rogers) is a rather lonely guy. His only companions have been his Deep Space Insanity Avoidance Robot Companion (Fred Armisen), the ship's AI (Tom Kenny), and a refrigerator he's called "Beth"... until he encounters Mooncake (Rogers), a charming green blob being hunted by the ruthless Lord Commander (David Tennant) Mooncake appears to have the ability to open the portal to Final Space, which is located at the very extremity of the cosmos.

As Gary and a motley crew of interplanetary characters strive to keep Mooncake safe, elude the Lord Commander, and reunite with Quinn, mayhem ensues. "Final Space," now in its third season, starts slowly and has a haphazard approach to humor, but it rapidly finds its footing and delivers some shocking emotional gut punches along the way.

  5. The Great North, set in Alaska, is essentially the cold-weather cousin of "Bob's Burgers." Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, the show's creators, have been writing for "Bob's Burgers" since 2011, while Loren Bouchard is the show's producer.

It also follows the adventures of the Tobins, a quirky, super-loving family led by single dad Beef (Nick Offerman), who is in denial after his wife left him and tries to keep his surviving family close... perhaps a little too close for some who desire to flap their wings a little. Judy (Jenny Slate), the teen daughter, prefers to work at a mall photography studio rather than on the family fishing boat, while Wolf (Will Forte), the eldest son, wishes to move out (and live in the cabin next door) with his girlfriend, Honeybee (Dulcé Sloan). Moon (Aparna Nacherla) is the youngest brother, while Ham Tobin (Paul Rust) is the middle brother, who is kind of spacey but good-hearted.

A recurring theme in The Great North is that your imagination has room to roam, both literally and figuratively, which leads the Tobins into bizarre situations like capturing a moose tangled in birthday balloons, taking part in a town-wide Feast of Not People festival, and setting traps for Bigfoot. Oh, and keep a watch out for Judy's imaginary friend Alanis Morisette (voiced by the actual Alanis Morisette), who emerges in the Aurora Borealis' light to give shady advice about males and adolescence.

  6. This one will convince you that Harley Quinn is more than simply the Joker's girlfriend! Harley (Kaley Cuoco) ultimately discovers that the Joker doesn't actually love her after being imprisoned for months. Free of her obsession with the Joker (and his patronizing attitude toward her), Harley sets out to establish herself as a villain in Gotham and gathers her own posse. Harley fights the Joker with the help of DC villains like Poison Ivy, Clayface, and Doctor Psycho in a wild and violent battle that leaves Gotham in shambles.

Produced by Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, and Dean Lorey, this program is about much more than a lady getting over her ex. "Harley Quinn" is a new take on the famous Harley-Joker connection, filled with dark comedy, a strong female protagonist, and stunning animation.

  7. The new series Invincible, based on Robert Kirkman's comic book character of the same name, asks a huge question: What does it cost to have superpowers? Mark Grayson (voiced by Steven Yuen with some fantastically punny one-liners) develops abilities after turning 17 in this satire of superhero movies and media. This isn't surprising. Mark aspires to be like his father, Nolan (J.K. Simmons), nicknamed Omni-Man, the most powerful superhero in the world.

Mark, eager to please, devotes himself to training under his father's supervision, earning the title Invincible in the process. However, Nolan is concealing a massive secret, the gravity of which threatens to destroy the universe and irrevocably alter his son's perception of him. Sandra Oh, Mark Hamill, Seth Rogen, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz, Walton Goggins, and Jason Mantzoukas are among the voice actors that lend their talents to this fantastic series.

  8. This animated podcast series follows Clancy (Duncan Trussell) as he journeys across odd and beautiful realms using his multiverse simulator, created by Pendleton Ward of "Adventure Time" and Duncan Trussell. Each episode takes place on a distinct planet, with unique hallucinogenic sceneries in which Clancy conducts his interviews. Despite the fact that Clancy is seen interviewing odd and magical animated creatures, the discussions heard on Trussell's podcast "The Duncan Trussell Family Hour" were held between actual individuals. "The Midnight Gospel" has it all: captivating graphics, apocalyptic themes, and interviews with people like Drew Pinsky and Damien Echols, as well as Caitlin Doughty.

The fact that all of Season 1's guest stars are white is worth noting and, frankly, infuriating. In future seasons, Ward and Trussell should be able to set their animations to talks with a wider range of visitors. Regardless, if you're in the mood for some bright cartoons and humorous interviews, this program is a must-see.

  9. On paper, the absurdist "Neo Yokio" should make no sense, let alone on our screens. In this other New York chronology, 19th-century magicians saved the city from demons, and their descendants now reign as snobbish but magnificent Magistocrats. Our affluent, pink-haired hero Kaz (Jaden Smith) has it all, including a robot butler named Charles (voiced by Desus and Mero) and two zany companions. Kaz's major goal in life, despite being irresponsible and wealthy, is to beat his enemy Arcangelo to the top of the city's Bachelor's List. Oh, and Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend is the mastermind behind this odd concoction.

From the theatrical romance of "Sailor Moon" to the gender- and species-bending shenanigans of "Ranma 1/2," the series is a charming combination of classic anime homages. Add in hip-hop earworms, Victorian-futurist high society dramas, and a fondness for pink, and you've got a one-of-a-kind style that will have you feeling as cozy as Mecha in a sassy yet snuggly sweater. This six-episode series (with a fantastic extra "Pink Christmas" special) pokes fun at the rich and powerful, but with such warmth and off-kilter comedy that one can't help but enjoy the escapist as much as the optimism.
