Threes' simplicity demonstrates that the best iOS games don't have to be complex or have great graphics. Threes is a math-based game in which you slide numbered tiles against the wall to form like pairs in multiples of three up to 24. Use the wall to make a 6 by combining two 3 cards, a 12 by combining two 6 cards, and so on. "You can learn it in a minute," the developers claim, but it may become one of those apps that never leaves your phone. The ad-supported version is free if you don't like the thought of paying $5.99 for such a basic concept.

Fallout Shelter is a free-to-play simulation video game created by Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks with support from Behaviour Interactive. In this game, you're in charge of maintaining a gigantic bunker in the aftermath of a nuclear war, and you need to check in to make sure you have enough food, water, power, and other resources.

As your bunker grows, the free app becomes more sophisticated, so you'll need to make strategic resource allocation decisions and ward off attackers. The best part is that everything is drawn in the beloved signature art style from the Fallout series, but you don't have to be a fan of that series to enjoy it.

Monument Valley is strange, not because of the $3.99 price tag, but because of the game's badly digitized eyes. Instead, you'll be working your way through M.C. Escher-inspired chambers with gravity-defying stairs and impossible views in this greatest iOS game. Monument Valley has a lot of it in the original film as well, but this sequel has a stronger emotional effect by following a mother and daughter as they navigate the weird settings.

Because it is so close to perfection, Monument Valley is the most challenging of inventions. Ida, the white-robed protagonist, is thrust into a world of impossible monuments, Escher-like architecture littered with switches that expose new pathways that she looks unable to access. By sliding the screen to rotate structures and reveal new components that may be interacted with, such as sharp walls suddenly becoming accessible tunnels or jagged and seemingly different chunks of stone combining at the perfect angle to make a bridge, the environment can be modified.
