Top 5 Best Modern Fairy Tale Movies

Most of us have already been familiar with classic fairy tales like “Sleeping Beauty” or “Snow White”. But have you ever considered revisiting those stories ... read more...

  1. In Black Swan, Nina (played by Natalie Portman) is a ballet dancer whose life is ruled by her love for dancing. Nina is the director's first pick to replace his ballerina in the company's inaugural staging play of Swan Lake. She has to face some fierce competition from Lily (Mila Kunis), a newbie. Lily typifies the Black Swan, whilst Nina is ideal for the portrayal of the White Swan. As the two dancers' competition morphs into a perverse camaraderie, Nina's evil side starts to show.

Black Swan - a movie that is inspired from the classic fairy tale "The Swan Lake" - is a top-tier thriller that is visceral, affecting, and breathtakingly beautiful. In the same vein, it is also a picture of the shadows of our own minds, generated when they are overpowered by ambition.

Director Aronofsky, whose earlier recent films demonstrate a similar interest in the acute humanity and obsessive ambitions of his characters, gives us a dramatic and moving perspective inside the hallucination of a perfectionist dancer. There are, however, times when his storyline falters, and it appears as if the filmmaker is catering to a mass audience that might not need to be persuaded.

  2. Wendy Darling (played by Rachel Hurd-Woods) is visited by Peter Pan (played by Jeremy Popplewell) while she is telling her brothers John and Michael some fairy tales. Peter, a kid who never grows old, welcomes Wendy and her siblings to Neverland, the island where he and the Lost Boys reside. Once there, however, Captain Hook (played by Jason Isaacs) kidnaps Wendy and her siblings. Peter, with the help of Tink (by Ludivine Sagnier), must confront Hook in order to save his friends.

"Peter Pan'' is a magical journey for any child seeking fun and entertainment, and director Hogan gives it to every child with incredible special effects (one of the crowd's favorites is when the children are traveling to Neverland for the first time). And he even finds a way to make early twentieth-century London look mystical, with a plotline that is funny, thrilling, and heart wrenching at the same time.

The movie also presents a common theme that every audience can understand: as Wendy bids farewell to Peter, she is also bidding farewell to her youth and starting to approach adulthood. Wendy is someone who wishes to move on with her life, but "Peter Pan" represents the inner kid who never grows up, the child in all of us who wants to battle pirates, fly, and have incredible adventures forever.

  3. In "Beauty and The Beast", bright, attractive, and independent Belle (played by Emma Watson) is trapped by a beast (played by Dan Stevens) in his castle. Despite her worries, she tries to make friends with the castle's magical servants and learns to see beyond the Beast's horrible appearance. This enabled her to see through the prince's gentle heart and spirit that lies inside.

Despite adhering to the animated film's concept of the love between Belle and the Beast, this live-action adds more origin tales to the Beast's transformation and the location of Belle's mother. Outside of the acknowledged truth that he is not a man anymore, the Beast's new storylines add to the depths of his grief and provide a deeper explanation for why he is so furious and sorrowful. Also, the origin story of Belle's mother is tragic but logical, clearly explaining how she died and why she was not the focus of the animated picture.

You might add "Beauty and the Beast" to the long list of competent Disney live-action adaptations. Even if it is inferior to the 1991 classic, it is still one of the best modern fairy tale movies - another proof that Disney can never do things wrong.

  4. In Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Princess Aurora (played by Elle Fanning) is now Queen of the Moors, a mystical territory bordering human kingdoms - as ordered by her fairy godmother, the evil and fiercely protective Maleficent (played by Angelina Jolie).

Aurora is a loving (and naive) queen who wants only the best things for her people and believes that peace may be mediated between all nations, despite her lack of a human realm. She is presented with this chance when Prince Phillip (played by Harris Dickinson) proposes to her. Aurora accepts a dinner invitation on behalf of Maleficent and herself, believing that this union would bridge the gap between humans and faeries, which laid the scene for treachery, exile, death, and rebirth.

Maleficent has become such a common costume for Halloween festivals because this story is so beautiful. Angelina Jolie epitomizes Maleficent's elegance and frightening beauty, as well as a sensitive side built on by years of rejection and distrust, despite her sharp angles and black attire. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil deserves its spot on our list of the best modern fairy tale movies of all time.

  5. In "Mirror Mirror", there is a jealous and wicked queen (played by Julia Roberts). The Queen plots to seize power from Snow White (played by Lily Collins), who is the legitimate ruler of her land.

When a lovely prince (Armie Hammer) chooses Snow White over the Queen, the Queen - in her rage - orders her people to throw the princess into the forest so that the young girl would be eaten by terrifying beasts. Luckily, Snow White was soon rescued by a gang of miniature highway robbers. She swears to reclaim her kingdom from the evil Queen with the aid of her rescuers.

"Mirror Mirror" is a funny and bright retelling of the fairytale "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", which we have all been so familiar with. Actress Lily Collins is likable in her part, but it was Julia Roberts who stole the show with her excessively garish outfits. "Mirror Mirror" is as garishly stunning as you would expect if you have watched director Tarsem Singh's previous movies, 'The Fall' and 'Immortals'.
