  1. Ecobee's new high-end smart thermostat is the SmartThermostat with Voice Control. The pricing is hefty at $249 (with one temperature sensor), but Ecobee added several smarts to this model that make it worth considering. The Ecobee4 will remain available for $249 as long as supplies last, and while the new model isn't a huge improvement over the previous one.

Ecobee was one of the earliest smart thermostat manufacturers. Ecobee is Nest's main rival in the business, and it is now in its fifth generation with the SmartThermostat with Voice Control. While Nest impressed buyers with its stylish look when it debuted its first smart thermostat in 2011, Ecobee rapidly raced ahead in terms of functionality, delivering a remote temperature sensor before Nest and inventing faster with features such as a built-in Alexa speaker.

  2. Create an account using the Honeywell Home app. To add a new device, click the plus symbol and then choose "T9 or T10 Pro" from the list of alternatives. The app will then start looking for your thermostat and will prompt you to establish a house, including giving it a name and inputting your address (this step is necessary for geofencing to work). The app will ask you a series of questions about your preferred temperature settings and provide you with the option to enable geofencing. In the Honeywell Home app, you may change the radius of the home/away mode geofencing. When you leave the area, your phone instructs the thermostat to go into away mode; when you return, it goes back into home mode.

This thermostat is Energy Star-certified, saving an average of $50 on a yearly energy bill. It has a simple, modern design and an optional wall plate if you need to cover any old paint or holes. The touchscreen interface is minimal but makes it easy to adjust the thermostat and switch among heat, air conditioning and other basic settings.

  3. The Nest Thermostat (or Nest Learning Thermostat) is a smart thermostat invented by Tony Fadell, Ben Filson, and Fred Bould for Nest Labs. It is a Wi-Fi-enabled electronic, programmable, and self-learning thermostat that optimizes heating and cooling in homes and workplaces to save energy.

While Nest's $249 (£185/AU$330 converted) third-generation Learning Thermostat isn't significantly different from prior models, it does have a larger screen and a smaller profile, as well as a few new functions. It contains a novel sensor that detects your presence from a distance and displays the time, inside temperature, or current weather prediction. Voice interactions with Google Assistant and Alexa are also supported.

It also works with Nest's temperature sensor, which was introduced in 2018, almost three years after this thermostat was originally available for purchase. The temperature sensor is offered individually for $39 or packaged with the thermostat for $19 ($268 total). Install one in your child's bedroom, the basement, or any other location where the temperature may be unusually hot or cold, so you may use it as the default temperature reading for your home (rather than your thermostat's built-in temperature sensor).

  4. Google Nest is a smart home product range that includes smart speakers, displays, streaming devices, thermostats, smoke detectors, routers, and security solutions such as smart doorbells, cameras, and smart locks.

This low-cost version of the Nest is a fantastic choice for smaller houses. Despite the fact that its display is plastic and only displays the current temperature when someone enters the room, its learning skills are comparable to those of the ordinary Google Nest. If it's humid inside, Nest E can turn on the air conditioning to provide cooler, drier air. It, too, delivers smartphone warnings for abrupt temperature fluctuations, as well as monthly energy use information, similar to the Nest. The Nest E supports fewer home settings than the normal Nest, so double-check your space's compatibility before purchasing this one.

  5. The ecobee3 light is another learning thermostat that is ideal for smaller houses as a standalone unit. It includes remote sensors that detect occupancy as well as temperature, allowing it to switch off heating or cooling in vacant rooms. It, like the Nest E, may function with air conditioning to reduce interior humidity in the absence of a dehumidifier, and monthly reports compare energy use to neighbors. Whereas the Nest E is compatible with Amazon, Google, and Samsung smart home systems, the ecobee3 lite also works with Apple's HomeKit.

The ecobee3 lite, like the $160 Emerson Sensi Wi-Fi Programmable Thermostat, is just semi-smart; it lacks a remote sensor and other advanced functions. Instead, it fills the gap between $100 app-enabled thermostats with no smart home integrations and $250 high-end ones with smart home integrations and technology that learns your habit and adjusts the temperature automatically.
