The Cable News Network (abbreviated CNN) is an American basic cable and satellite television channel owned by Time Warner's Turner Broadcasting System division. Ted Turner, an American media mogul, founded the 24-hour cable news channel in 1980. CNN was the first television channel in the United States to provide 24-hour television news coverage, as well as the first all-news television channel.

While CNN has many affiliates, it primarily broadcasts from the CNN Center in Atlanta, the Time Warner Center in New York City, and studios in Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles. CNN/U.S. is used to distinguish the American channel from its international counterpart, CNN International. CNN programming is broadcast globally via CNN International, which is available to viewers in over 212 countries and territories.

The Fox News Channel (FNC), also known as Fox News, is a New York-based American multinational conservative news and political commentary television channel and website. Fox News Media, which is owned by the Fox Corporation, owns it. It is the most-watched cable network in the United States and generates approximately 70% of its parent company's pre-tax profit as of 2023. The channel primarily broadcasts from 1211 Avenue of the Americas in Midtown Manhattan. Fox News serves 86 countries and territories through international broadcasts that include Fox Extra segments during commercial breaks.

Rupert Murdoch founded the channel in 1996 to appeal to a conservative audience, hiring former Republican media consultant and CNBC executive Roger Ailes as its founding CEO. On October 7, 1996, it debuted for 17 million cable subscribers. Fox News grew to become the dominant cable news subscription network in the United States during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Fox News scandals have included biased reporting in favor of the Republican Party, its politicians, and conservative causes while portraying the Democratic Party negatively. Critics claim that the channel undermines the credibility of news in general. Fox News has denied that its reporting is biased. The channel's official stance is that its reporting is separate from its opinion journalism.

HuffPost (formerly The Huffington Post; often abbreviated as HuffPo) is an American progressive news website. News website with national and international editions. Politics, business, entertainment, the environment, technology, popular media, lifestyle, culture, comedy, healthy living, women's interests, and local news are all covered by the site's columnists. It was founded to offer a progressive alternative to conservative news websites like the Drudge Report. The site features content that has been posted directly on the site as well as user-generated content in the form of video blogging, audio, and photos. The website was the first commercially run digital media enterprise in the United States to win a Pulitzer Prize in 2012.

The site was founded on May 9, 2005, as a competitor to the Drudge Report by Andrew Breitbart, Arianna Huffington, Kenneth Lerer, and Jonah Peretti. In March 2011, AOL paid $315 million for it, making Arianna Huffington editor-in-chief. In June 2015, Verizon Communications paid $4.4 billion for AOL, and the site became part of Verizon Media. BuzzFeed will buy the company in November 2020. Within weeks of the acquisition, BuzzFeed laid off 47 HuffPost employees in the United States (mostly journalists) and closed down HuffPost Canada, laying off 23 employees from the company's Canadian and Quebec divisions.

USA Today is a daily middle-market newspaper and news broadcasting company in the United States. Al Neuharth founded the newspaper on September 15, 1982, and it is headquartered at Gannett's corporate headquarters in Tysons, Virginia. Its newspaper is printed at 37 locations in the United States and five additional locations internationally. The news division of the American broadcast television network NBC is known as NBC News. The division is part of NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, which is a division of NBCUniversal, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Comcast. The various operations of the news division report to NBC News President Noah Oppenheim. National Public Radio (NPR) is an American nonprofit media organization based in Washington, D.C., with its NPR West headquarters in Culver City, California. It is a national syndicator for over 1,000 public radio stations in the United States. It differs from other non-profit membership media organizations, such as the Associated Press, in that it was created by a congressional act.

NPR is supported by dues and fees paid by member stations, corporate sponsorship, and annual grants from the publicly funded Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Non-profit organizations, such as public school districts, colleges, and universities, own the majority of their member stations. Yahoo! News is a news website that started out as an internet-based news aggregator. In August 1996, a Yahoo! software engineer named Brad Clawsie launched the site. Articles were first published by news organizations such as the Associated Press, Reuters, Fox News, Al Jazeera, ABC News, USA Today, CNN, and BBC News. Yahoo! News launched the first "most-emailed" page on the web in 2001. It was well-received as a novel idea, broadening people's understanding of the impact of online news sources on news consumption. The Los Angeles Times, also known as the LA Times, is a daily regional newspaper that first appeared in Los Angeles in 1881. It is the sixth-largest newspaper by circulation in the United States, as well as the largest in the western United States, and has been based in the Los Angeles County city of El Segundo since 2018. The publication has received over 40 Pulitzer Prizes. Patrick Soon-Shiong owns it, and the Times Mirror Company publishes it. The newspaper's coverage has recently shifted away from national and international headlines and toward stories about California, particularly Southern California.

The paper gained a reputation in the nineteenth century for civic boosterism and opposition to labor unions, the latter of which resulted in the bombing of its headquarters in 1910. Newsweek is a weekly news magazine published in the United States. Dev Prasad, its president and CEO, and Johnathan Davis, who has no operational role, each owns 50% of the company. It began as a weekly print magazine in 1933 and was widely distributed throughout the twentieth century, with many notable editors-in-chief. The Washington Post Company purchased the magazine in 1961 and retained ownership until 2010.

Due to revenue declines, The Washington Post Company sold it in August 2010 to audio pioneer Sidney Harman for one dollar and the assumption of the magazine's liabilities. Later that year, Newsweek merged with The Daily Beast, a news and opinion website, to form The Newsweek Daily Beast Company. The estate of Harman and the diversified American media and Internet company IAC jointly owned Newsweek. Newsweek's financial difficulties persisted, resulting in the discontinuation of print publication and the transition to an all-digital format at the end of 2012.

The Chicago Tribune is a daily newspaper published by Tribune Publishing in Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. Founded in 1847 as the "World's Greatest Newspaper" (a slogan for which WGN radio and television are named), it is still the most-read daily newspaper in the Chicago metropolitan area and the Great Lakes region. It had the sixth-highest circulation of any American newspaper in 2017.

Under Joseph Medill's leadership in the 1850s, the Chicago Tribune became closely associated with Illinois politician Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party's progressive wing. In the twentieth century, it gained a reputation as a crusading paper with a decidedly more American-conservative anti-New Deal outlook under Medill's grandson, Robert R. McCormick, and its writing reached other markets through family and corporate relationships at the New York Daily News and the Washington Times-Herald. In the 1960s, its corporate parent company, Tribune Company, expanded into new markets. For the first time in its nearly 150-year history, its editorial page endorsed a Democrat, Illinoisan Barack Obama, for President of the United States in 2008.

Originally published exclusively as a broadsheet, the Tribune announced on January 13, 2009, that it would continue to publish as a broadsheet for home delivery but would publish in tabloid format for newsstand, news box, and commuter station sales. This change, however, was unpopular with readers, and the Tribune discontinued the tabloid edition in August 2011, returning to its traditional broadsheet format across all distribution channels.
