The Faculty of Veterinary Science is among major faculties of the University of Pretoria. Established in 1920, it is the second-oldest veterinary school in Africa. Except for the faculties in Khartoum (Sudan, 1938) and Cairo (Egypt, 1946), all other African faculties were set up after 1960. It is the only Faculty in South Africa and one of 33 Veterinary Faculties in Africa.

The Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Pretoria offers undergraduate and veterinary nurse degree programs, as well as a variety of graduate programs. Its 4,444 faculty graduates are recognized nationally and internationally, and the University of Pretoria BVSc is currently accredited by the Royal Veterinary Society of England (RCVS) and the Australian Veterinary Society of Australia (AVBC) in New Zealand, Tasmania and relevant authorities Malaysia as a whole.

The Department of Agriculture and Animal Health is a faculty of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) School of Agriculture and Life Sciences. It includes three programs: Agriculture, Animal Health and Human Ecology.
This department offers undergraduate qualifications which are the National Diploma in Animal Health (NDANM)

University of South Africa Department of Agriculture and Animal Health also offers graduate programs with a Master of Agriculture qualification (MSc. Agriculture). It also offers various interventions included treatment of ectoparasitic infections such as hookworms, ticks and fleas, and vaccination against rabies and other viral diseases in dogs and cats. Surgical procedures comprise castration and hysterectomy. After the demonstration, students can move to another station and complete each task independently.

Tshwane University of Technology is a higher education institution in South Africa that is a merger of three Technikon companies: Technikon Northern Gauteng, Technikon NorthWest and Technikon Pretoria.

Founded in 1982, Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) is a university offering a doctorate in veterinary medicine. Beginning in 2014, RUSVM began offering master's and doctoral degrees in public health, global animal health, conservation medicine, and other research areas supported by the school. The school is situated in St.Kitts. The administrative office is located in Downers Grove, Illinois. RUSVM is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Board of Education.

The RUSVM students come from all over the world, most of them U.S. citizens or permanent residents, who can apply for financial aid under Title IV of the Higher Education Act. As of 2019, RUSVM has over 5500 veterinary graduates. RUSVM accepts students three times a year (September, January and May). RUSVM is owned by Adtalem Global Education.

The University of Zululand, or Unizulu, is the only comprehensive higher education institution north of the Tuguela River in the state of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Its new status aligns with South Africa's national higher education plan to end inequality and costly cloning. Vet Tech Institute offers an 18-month program for students pursuing the core skills to get ready for admission of the veterinary care field. Its curriculum, facilities, cohort instruction, and experienced faculty each play an important role in the success of students.
