  1. Rifle Paper Co. was founded in 2009 by husband and wife team Nathan and Anna Bond. Over the years, they have grown their company from two people to more than 150 people. 3. In 2003, they started tinkering with a letter-writing machine and helped their friends glue beautiful sheets of paper to their letters. As each custom product is sent out, more and more people are asking. So more and more stationery is produced. At a time when the world was firmly moving online, they took the risk and focused on building our business offline, making beautiful, tangible things by hand that would go beyond anything in the digital space.

  4. Zenas Crane, son of Stephen, learned the art of papermaking from his father and founded his own paper mill in 1801, catering mainly to banks, printers and shopkeepers. After he retired, he left the business to his sons, Zenas Marshall and James Brewer, and has seen marked growth since then. Zenas Marshall devised a method of dipping the silk thread vertically on the banknote as a way to mark the denomination of the bill.

It is no coincidence that a company exists for more than 200 years. That continues to be the driving force behind Crane Currency to continue investing in research and development in pursuit of world-class technology.

  7. Christine Schmidt's career began in elementary school when she won a bicycle in a local grocer's coloring contest. This bike is red and has a full ten speeds! After spending her youth in the plains of Kansas City and art school in Washington D.C., she and her lover, Evan, moved west to a tiny place atop San Francisco's windswept Bernal Hills. Energized by public radio programs, she spent every night creating hand-printed cards and gifts. Finding local suppliers and working with eco-friendly materials, she began honing her product line. In 2007, after a long research, Christine brought a box of her goods to some local stores, they placed an order and Yellow Owl Workshop was born.

The Yellow Owl Workshop today is busy with a team of hard-working people in a studio in the sunny Mission District. Although the Yellow Owl Workshop has grown and can be found in stores worldwide, its original values are still shown in each product. Legend says that if you hold a stamp set carefully, you can still smell Earl Gray and hear an episode of "Radio Lab".

  8. The story begins in 1931, during the tumultuous period of the Great Depression, when George O'Connor took the opportunity and bought a bankrupt paper mill in Upstate New York. Convinced that the mill and the craftsmen who work there are worth saving, he strives to create paper that is durable and unique as well as skillfully and beautifully handcrafted. This purposeful foresight has become a philosophy well understood by four generations of the O'Connor family as they have guided Mohawk forward.

Today, they're building on that legacy as they serve the creative needs of designers, brand owners and printers in more than 60 countries with carefully crafted, hand-crafted papers designed to make prints better, more efficient in the digital-first world. As a family owned business, they strive to treat everyone like family; from 600 employees to customers and partners. That's because their business is built on relationships, handshake trust, communication, and honesty with everyone they work with. The fact that Mohawk has been around for four generations means they make new product decisions and innovations in the long term, not just the next quarter. And because they care about the environment, they do all of this with future generations in mind, by sourcing their pulp responsibly, conserving the water on which their craft rests, and harness wind energy for their factories.
