Africa's tallest skyscraper was built in three years in the desert in central Cairo, 45 kilometers east of the Nile. The 385-meter-tall concrete structure of the Iconic Tower was completed in June and the steel structure is due for completion in August. The completed building is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2022.

It will be the centerpiece of 20 CBD towers in the New Administrative Capital, a mega project launched by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi in 2015.

“A new era in Egypt", said Ahmed Al Banna, CBD project leader for Dar AlHandasah, design and supervisory consultant.
“The iconic tower itself will become a symbol and trademark of the new capital. It will show the seriousness of the government and the president's will to create a new capital with all conveniences," he said.

The Leonardo is a 55-storey complex in Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa, at 234 meters (768 feet), 11 meters taller than the Carlton Center, which was previously the tallest building in Africa. The building is located at 75 Maude Street, about 100 meters from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

The Leonardo includes a street-level shop as well as a high podium with a swimming pool, restaurant and many other facilities. The service is open to the public and can be booked through Legacy Hotels and Resorts. It has been announced that the
2,100 square meter three-story penthouse will be sold for 180 million rupees, making it the most expensive private property sold in South Africa. The total structure, worth 2 billion rubles, consists of 200 apartments and 11 floors of commercial offices.

The design of The Leonardo has changed significantly since its announcement and was originally designed by architecture firm AMA and was planned to be completed by 2010.

On November 17, 2015, Leonardo began construction. By the end of April 2018, Leonardo had become the tallest building in Sandton, surpassing the Sandton City Office Tower at 141 meters high, and by mid-April 2019, Leonardo climbed to the top, officially making it the tallest building in Africa. The iconic tower of the new administrative capital has already reached a higher height (250 m in October 2020) but will not be considered a building until completed.

Carlton Center is a 50-story skyscraper and shopping center located in downtown Johannesburg, South Africa. At 223 meters (732 feet), it is the third-tallest building in Africa after Leonardo and Iconic Tower - the tallest office building. The foundations of the two buildings in the complex are 5 m (16 ft) in diameter and extend 15 m (49 ft) to the cliff and down 35 m (115 ft) to street level. The building houses offices and shops and is more than 46% underground. Carlton Center is connected to the Carlton Hotel via an underground shopping center with more than 180 shops.

In the past, The Carlton Center, a 223-meter-tall skyscraper and shopping center in Johannesburg, South Africa, was the tallest building in Africa since its completion in 1973. Designed by US architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, Carlton Centre resembles the well-known One Seneca Tower in Buffalo, New York, which was finished in the same year.

Britam Tower, a 200-metre-tall office complex located in Nairobi's Upper Hill, overtook the UAP Old Mutual Tower to become Kenya's tallest building and officially opened to the public in July 2018. The 31-story tower, which began construction in early 2013 and completed in September 2017, boasts a unique prismatic design.

In the broadest sense, the building looks like a black pyramid without a top edge, but from other perspectives becomes a thinner black prism. In 2018, Britam Tower became the first building in Africa to win the Emporis Skyscrapers Award’s 19-year history since it was selected as one of the world's 10 tallest buildings.

It is also the tallest building in East Africa. Britam Tower is a commercial building in Nairobi owned by the British American Investment Company (Britam).

The completion of the 198-metre-high Ethiopian Commercial Bank (CBE) Tower in Addis Ababa created the tallest building in Ethiopia and ended domination of the AU convention center and office complex. The 46-story CBE Tower, under construction next to the Ethiopia Hotel on Ras Desta Damteu Street, is a 150,000-square-meter skyscraper. M, will serve as the headquarters of the State Bank.

As of early 2015, the Ethiopian Commercial Bank signed a contract with China State Construction Corporation (CSCEC) to construct a building worth $267 million (approx. 28 billion shillings). After its completion, CBE Headquarters will become the tallest building in Ethiopia. It acts as the headquarters of the state-owned Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, the country's largest bank.

The topping out of Nairobi GTC Office Tower, the tallest of the six towers of the Sh40 billion Global Trade Centre, has added a new member in the list of Kenya’s tallest buildings.

The 43-story, 184-metre office block is expected to be the African headquarters of Avic, China, which aims to establish a continental hub on a 7.5-acre site in the Westlands of Nairobi.

Six security systems, 360 degree natural light, 1,037 parking spaces, 153 private parking spaces for VICs, a dedicated Sky Club and many retail facilities all contribute to the best business experience in East Africa. The era of international wealth has arrived. The tower, which started construction in July 2015, is expected to be completed in December.

Ponte City is a 172.8 m tall skyscraper in the Berea suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. Built in 1975 by South African architect Manfred Hermer, the 54-story tower is the tallest residential building in Africa.

Ponte City boasts a cylindrical design with an open center to allow more natural light to enter the apartment. It is recorded as the first cylindrical skyscraper in Africa. An open center allowing additional light to the apartment, a central space known as the "core" rises above an uneven stone floor. After construction, Ponte City was considered a very attractive place for its views of the whole of Johannesburg and its surroundings. The rooftop neon sign was the largest billboard in the Southern Hemisphere, advertising the Coca-Cola Company until 2000. It currently advertises for Vodacom, a South African mobile phone company.

On February 28, the topping out ceremony for the main structure of the C04 office building of the CBD project in New Administrative Capital built by CSCEC (Egypt) was taken place, marking the completion of the main structure of the office building with the largest volume and the highest height. Nearly 100 participants including representatives from CSCEC Egypt, Package 1 of the project, NUCA and DAR supervision company, and various teams of the project joined in this important ceremony.

Office Building C04 has a total floor area of 121,000 m2 and a total floor area of 170 m2, with 36 floors, 2 basement levels and 34 above ground. Office building C04 started construction in December 2018 and the main building began construction in May 2019.

Located on Nairobi's Upper Hill, Old Mutual Tower's 163-meter tall UAP opened in July 2016 after more than five years of construction, making it Kenya's tallest building at that and surpassing Times Tower which had held that record for 15 years.

The 33-story building, which has lost the title to the Britam Tower provides approximately 300,000 square feet of Class A office space in Nairobi's fastest growing commercial area.

At 5,700 feet above sea level, the old UAP reciprocal tower pushed the Rahimtulla Tower from Nairobi's highest point. UAP Tower is under the ownership of UAP Old Mutual Group, a financial services conglomerate headquartered in Kenya, with subsidiaries in six African countries.

NECOM House (formerly NITEL Tower, formerly NET Building), a 158-meter skyscraper in Lagos, is officially the tallest building in all of Nigeria and West Africa.

Built in 1979, NECOM House is the headquarters of Nigerian Telecommunication Limited, a former state-owned telecommunication company. The spire at the top of the building serves as a lighthouse for the port of Lagos.

The NECOM House was designed by Ghanaian architecture firm Nickson Borys and Partners and built by British firm Costtain Group. It has claimed the title from Cocoa House and become the tallest building in Nigeria.
