  1. Africa's tallest skyscraper was built in three years in the desert in central Cairo, 45 kilometers east of the Nile. The 385-meter-tall concrete structure of the Iconic Tower was completed in June and the steel structure is due for completion in August. The completed building is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2022.


    It will be the centerpiece of 20 CBD towers in the New Administrative Capital, a mega project launched by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi in 2015.


    “A new era in Egypt", said Ahmed Al Banna, CBD project leader for Dar AlHandasah, design and supervisory consultant.
    “The iconic tower itself will become a symbol and trademark of the new capital. It will show the seriousness of the government and the president's will to create a new capital with all conveniences," he said.

The Leonardo is a 55-storey complex in Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa, at 234 meters (768 feet), 11 meters taller than the Carlton Center, which was previously the tallest building in Africa. The building is located at 75 Maude Street, about 100 meters from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.


    The Leonardo includes a street-level shop as well as a high podium with a swimming pool, restaurant and many other facilities. The service is open to the public and can be booked through Legacy Hotels and Resorts. It has been announced that the
    2,100 square meter three-story penthouse will be sold for 180 million rupees, making it the most expensive private property sold in South Africa. The total structure, worth 2 billion rubles, consists of 200 apartments and 11 floors of commercial offices.


    The design of The Leonardo has changed significantly since its announcement and was originally designed by architecture firm AMA and was planned to be completed by 2010.

    On November 17, 2015, Leonardo began construction. By the end of April 2018, Leonardo had become the tallest building in Sandton, surpassing the Sandton City Office Tower at 141 meters high, and by mid-April 2019, Leonardo climbed to the top, officially making it the tallest building in Africa. The iconic tower of the new administrative capital has already reached a higher height (250 m in October 2020) but will not be considered a building until completed.

  7. Ponte City is a 172.8 m tall skyscraper in the Berea suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. Built in 1975 by South African architect Manfred Hermer, the 54-story tower is the tallest residential building in Africa.


    Ponte City boasts a cylindrical design with an open center to allow more natural light to enter the apartment. It is recorded as the first cylindrical skyscraper in Africa. An open center allowing additional light to the apartment, a central space known as the "core" rises above an uneven stone floor. On February 28, the topping out ceremony for the main structure of the C04 office building of the CBD project in New Administrative Capital built by CSCEC (Egypt) was taken place, marking the completion of the main structure of the office building with the largest volume and the highest height.   10. NECOM House (formerly NITEL Tower, formerly NET Building), a 158-meter skyscraper in Lagos, is officially the tallest building in all of Nigeria and West Africa.


    Built in 1979, NECOM House is the headquarters of Nigerian Telecommunication Limited, a former state-owned telecommunication company. The spire at the top of the building serves as a lighthouse for the port of Lagos.

    The NECOM House was designed by Ghanaian architecture firm Nickson Borys and Partners and built by British firm Costtain Group. It has claimed the title from Cocoa House and become the tallest building in Nigeria.
