  1. The FIFA World Cup, often simply called the World Cup, is an international association football competition contested by the senior men's national teams of the members of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). The championship has been awarded every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held because of World War II.

The current format involves a qualification phase, which takes place over the preceding three years for all of the national teams all over the world under FIFA, to determine which teams are qualified for the tournament phase. In the tournament phase, 32 teams, including the automatically qualifying host nation(s), compete for the title at venues within the host nation(s) over about a month.

There have been a total of 21 World Cup tournaments to be organized so far with eight national teams to be honored. Among them, Brazil is now the best team that has won five times, and they are the only team to have played in every tournament. The other World Cup winners are Germany and Italy, with four titles each; Argentina, France, and inaugural winner Uruguay, with two titles each; England and Spain, with one title each.

The World Cup is considered the most prestigious association football tournament in the world, as well as the most widely viewed and followed single sporting event in the world. The cumulative viewership of all matches of the 2006 World Cup was estimated to be 26.29 billion with an estimated 715.1 million people watching the final match, a ninth of the entire population of the planet.

  2. The modern Olympic Games or Olympics are leading international sporting events featuring summer and winter sports competitions in which thousands of athletes from around the world participate in a variety of competitions. The Olympic Games are considered the world's foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating. The Olympic Games are normally held every four years, alternating between the Summer and Winter Olympics every two years in the four-year period.

Their creation was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games which were held in Olympia, Greece from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894, leading to the first modern Games in Athens in 1896. After over a century of development, the event has increased the number of participants from 241 athletes in 14 nations in 1896 to tens of thousands of athletes in over 200 countries all over the world.

The 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin were the first Games to be broadcast on television, though only to local audiences. The 1956 Winter Olympics in Italy were the first internationally televised Olympic Games, and the broadcasting rights for the following Winter Games in California were sold for the first time to specialized television broadcasting networks—CBS paid US$394,000 for the American rights. Viewership increased exponentially from the 1960s until the end of the 20th century. This was due to the advent of satellites for broadcasting live television worldwide starting in 1964, and the introduction of color television in 1968. The global audience for the 1968 Mexico City Games was estimated to be 600 million, whereas the audience numbers at the Los Angeles Games of 1984 had increased to 900 million; this number had swelled to 3.5 billion by the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 reached a global broadcast audience of more than three billion people, according to independent research conducted on behalf of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). A total of 3.05 billion unique viewers tuned in to coverage across linear TV and digital platforms.

  4. Established the first time in 1955 as the Coupe des Clubs Champions Européens (French for European Champion Clubs' Cup), and commonly known as the European Cup, the UEFA Champions League is an annual club football competition which is organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and contested by top-division European clubs. The tournament format decides the competition winners through a round-robin group stage to qualify for a double-legged knockout format and a single-leg final. It is one of the most prestigious football tournaments in the world and the most prestigious club competition in European football, played by the national league champions (and, for some nations, one or more runners-up) of their national associations.

It was initially a straight knockout tournament open only to the champions of Europe's domestic leagues, with its winner reckoned as the European club champion. The competition took on its current name in 1992, adding a round-robin group stage in 1991 and allowing multiple entrants from certain countries since the 1997–1998 season. It has since been expanded, and while most of Europe's national leagues can still only enter their champion, the strongest leagues now provide up to four teams.

In its present format, the Champions League begins in late June with a preliminary round, three qualifying rounds and a play-off round, all played over two legs. The six surviving teams enter the group stage, joining 26 teams qualified in advance. The 32 teams are drawn into eight groups of four teams and play each other in a double round-robin system. The eight group winners and eight runners-up proceed to the knockout phase that culminates with the final match in late May or early June. The winner of the Champions League qualifies for the following year's Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Real Madrid, a Spanish club is the best championship collector of the tournament with a total of 13 championships so far. There have been 22 clubs all around Europe at least one time that got the championship.

The past statistic shows that over nearly 400 million viewers in over 200 countries watched the final match with a total cost of broadcasting rights at over 1.63 billion USD.

  5. Thousands of tennis fans travel to tournaments every year to watch the best players in the world take to the court, surrounded by thousands of people. However, it should come as no surprise that the number of fans watching from home on TV or through live streaming is much bigger. The Grand Slam tournaments in tennis are the world's four most important annual professional tennis events. Wimbledon (England) is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the others being the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open. Wimbledon is the only major still played on grass, which is the traditional tennis playing surface.

The Grand Slam prize is the achievement of winning all four major championships in one discipline in the same calendar year, also referred to as the "Calendar-year Grand Slam" or "Calendar Slam". In doubles, a team may accomplish the Grand Slam playing together or a player may achieve it with different partners. Winning all four major championships consecutively but not within the same calendar year is referred to as a non-calendar-year Grand Slam while winning the four majors at any point during the course of a career is known as a Career Grand Slam.

The four Grand Slam tournaments are organized dividedly throughout the year. The Australian Open in January, the French Open from late May to early June, Wimbledon in late June to early July, and the US Open in August–September, with each, played over two weeks. The Australian and the United States tournaments are played on hard courts, the French on clay, and Wimbledon on grass. Wimbledon is the oldest tournament, founded in 1877, followed by the US in 1881, the French in 1891, and the Australian in 1905, but some were not officially designated majors until 1925.

Based on 2019 data, Eurosport found that the growth in digital Grand Slam viewing was up 20% with fans watching 36% longer. Approximately 973 Million viewers watched ATP events in 2015, compared to 395 Million that watched WTA events in 2015. 6. Formula One (also known as Formula 1 or F1) is the highest class of international racing for open-wheel single-seater formula racing cars sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The World Drivers' Championship, which became the FIA Formula One World Championship in 1981, has been one of the premier forms of racing around the world since its inaugural season in 1950. The word formula in the name refers to the set of rules to which all participants' cars must conform. A Formula One season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix, which take place worldwide on both purpose-built circuits and closed public roads.

Formula One cars are the fastest regulated road-course racing cars in the world, owing to very high cornering speeds achieved through the generation of large amounts of aerodynamic downforce. The cars underwent major changes in 2017, allowing wider front and rear wings, and wider tires, resulting in peak cornering forces near 6.5 lateral g and top speeds of around 350 km/h (215 mph).

With races airing on ABC, ESPN and ESPN2, the F1 season attracted an average of 934,000 viewers per race in 2021, shattering the previous season record average of 748,000 that was set in 1995. It was up 54 percent over the 2020 season average of 608,000 viewers and up 39 percent vs. the 2019 season average of 672,000 viewers. Formula 1 has made significant gains across digital, making F1 the second fastest-growing major sports league on the planet across the four major social platforms. In 2020, followers (across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Tiktok, Snapchat, Twitch and Chinese social platforms) were up 36% to 35 million, video views up 47% to 4.9 billion and total engagement up 99% to 810 million. Additionally, total video views across F1.com, the F1 app and social media were up +46% vs 2019 to 4.9 billion, unique users on F1.com and the F1 app were up +26% to 70.5 million and page views were up +13% to 1.3 billion. Formula 1 also amassed 14 million podcasts listens in 2020, with Beyond The Grid the most-listened-to motorsport podcast in the USA, UK, Australia and Canada, amongst other territories. The results mean that Formula 1 is now strongly outperforming other major sports in the digital arena including La Liga, NBA, PGA tour and the Premier League. The digital share of total minutes (including broadcast and digital) has grown from 7% in 2019 to 10% in 2020.
