A Giant Tower
Building a tower was televangelist Rex Humbard's idea. At the very end of proclaiming the word of God, the tallest structure imaginable. Each of his supporters only needed to contribute $25. Then he would construct a huge tower that towered over Akron, Ohio, from which he could broadcast the gospel to every nation on Earth. In order to fund his plan, Humbard was unable to raise enough money. The construction of the skyscraper was begun, and everything went reasonably well. A spinning restaurant was one of the things that were intended to surpass but were never completed.
The building was constructed in 1958. There are 5,400 seats in the Cathedral, a spherical structure with a sanctuary in the center and offices and classes around the periphery. A huge lit cross hangs from the ceiling and has a domed roof. The cross weighs 32 tons and is illuminated with 4,700 LEDs that can change colors, giving the domed roof more structural stability during windstorms. One of the world's biggest interior crosses is this one. The cathedral was the largest permanent dome construction without inner pillar support when it was constructed. As a result, the audience can see the stage more clearly.
