Adidas, Europe's leading sportswear and equipment manufacturer, was founded in Herzogenaurach, Germany, in 1949 by inventor, entrepreneur, and shoemaker Adolf "Adi" Dassler.

The Santiago Ball was provided by Adidas in 1963 to honor the FIFA World Cup that had been hosted in Chile a year before. They produced the Adidas Telstar ball seven years later, exclusively for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. This collaboration with

FIFA's success was such that the German company was awarded a contract to produce all premium balls for future FIFA World Cup competitions.

Adidas also makes the official balls for the UEFA Champions League, Europe's top club league, as well as the Tango Sevilla for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
