Agulu Lake
Standing atop the recently built bridge by the previous governor Peter Obi, one of the most beautiful sights in Anambra state is the expanse of water at Agulu Lake. Foreigners, non-natives, and students, particularly those enrolled in secondary institutions, have used the Lake as a tourist destination. It is a possible tourist destination and is where 300 crocodiles and water turtles reside.
The lake is off-limits to fishing, and because crocodiles are revered by the locals, they cannot be killed. According to legend, during the Nigerian civil war, these crocodiles helped save the town from enemy forces. It is thought that these revered crocodiles and turtles changed into lovely women to trick the troops into swimming into the lake, where they vanished into thin air. Around midday, turtles and crocodiles may be seen basking in the sun on the lake's shores.
Agulu Lake provides entertainment, excursions, and boat rides for visitors. The water is offered in bottles during market day, where customers buy it for a variety of uses, and the traditional local physicians use it for various medications. Through the money made from tourists and other prescription drugs, the lake also helps the local economy. Additionally, it is thought that the lake may heal "Ogbanje," or those who are possessed by bad spirits.
